The Society of Scrivener Notaries (the “Society”) is the representative body for scrivener notaries. The principal functions of the Society are:
- (i) to represent scrivener notaries before other bodies and organisations both in the United Kingdom and overseas; and
- (ii) to ensure the standards of scrivener notaries.
The Society works closely with the organisation known as The Scriveners Company (or to give it its full name, The Worshipful Company of Scriveners of the City of London). The Scriveners Company is one of the most historic of the City of London Livery Companies, with its origins dating back to 1373 and is the body responsible for the examination and education of scrivener notaries.
Representation of Scrivener Notaries
The Society is active in putting forward the views and acting in the interests of scrivener notaries. In today’s context, the Society is frequently engaged in matters of concern with the Faculty Office (the regulator of notaries in England and Wales), the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Legal Services Board to name but a few. In addition, the Society is a member of both the United Kingdom Notarial Forum and the International Union of Notaries (“UINL”). The Society enjoys a unique position within the UINL as, since 1998, it is the only member from a non-civil law country and the Society plays an active role in the UINL’s European Affairs Commission.
Standards
The Society works closely with the organisation known as The Scriveners Company (or to give it its full name, The Worshipful Company of Scriveners of the City of London). The Scriveners Company is one of the most historic of the City of London Livery Companies, with its origins dating back to 1373 and is the body responsible for the examination and education of scrivener notaries.
The qualification of scrivener notaries is managed by the Scriveners Company. Furthermore, the Society takes steps to ensure that those who do make it through the rigorous qualification process are well trained and kept up to date with developments. This is achieved through the organisation of various accredited training events and lectures.
Management
The Society is run as a company limited by guarantee incorporated and registered in England and Wales (company number 3164386).
